The Short and Shorter of Microtiming

In this presentation, Dr. Justin London will review recent work at the RITMO center (University of Oslo) on microtiming (i.e., the rhythmic structure of individual notes and sounds) in instrumental and vocal music. Topics to be discussed include “Where is the beat in that note?”, how differences in musical styles and training lead to different perceptions of microtiming, and how context can affect the perception of microtiming.
